Storyline, Unveiling a World of Wonder:
At the core of Trails of Kokoro lies a captivating and intricately woven storyline. Set in a vibrant fantasy world brimming with rich landscapes, the game invites players to embark on an awe-inspiring adventure. Each character’s backstory is meticulously crafted, leading to deep connections formed between the player and the virtual personas on the screen. The attention to detail is exceptional, making the universe of Trails of Kokoro feel alive and believable.
Trails of Kokoro’s narrative brilliance unfolds like any good tale, weaving together personal stories, lore, and destiny. The storyline transcends the boundaries of a traditional video game, immersing players in a thought-provoking tale, emotionally resonant, and rife with moral dilemmas.
The story begins when Rhea the sensitive and cute little Sol-Ikati stumbles upon a large sleeping man named Aedric, who appears to be some sort of knight. She affectionately nicknames “Big Guy”. Rhea is on a quest to search for an ailment for a sick friend in her village. After meeting Athena the traveling healer they head off to find the ailment together. The “ailment” being some special herbs. Rhea also gives Athena a nickname “churchgirl” due to being a Favoured of Trestae, Goddess of the Stars. The storyline is very wholesome which is a main point for me.
A Tapestry of Narrative Wholesomeness:
The main thing setting Trails of Kokoro apart from other games is its ability to tackle profound themes like love, honour, insecurity, loss, fear, identity, sacrifice, and the nature of humanity itself. As players navigate the trials and challenges of the group’s journey, they confront their own beliefs, values, and prejudices.
Character Development and Relationships:
The character development in Trails of Kokoro is nothing to turn your nose up to. As you engage with the various NPCs and companions, you witness their growth, fears, and dreams. Each character feels distinct and authentic, thanks to the skillful writing and portrayal of their emotions and struggles. The connections formed carry weight, creating a sense of responsibility and a desire to forge meaningful relationships.
Characters
Aedric
Aedric awakens in a mysterious forest, deep in the wilds of Hinode. He doesn’t remember anything before then, and is on a mission to remember who he is, and where he belongs. Aedric is incredibly naive about many things, and can be far too trusting of those he doesn’t know.
In battle, Aedric wears heavy armour and wields swords. Aedric can choose to carry a shield, which allows him to completely block incoming physical attacks, or he can forgo defense for greater attacking strength, choosing to fight with two-handed swords, instead. Aedric’s powers allow him to add a variety of elemental effects to his strikes, and he has a number of spell-like abilities, as well. (1)
Rhea
A young Sol-Ikati, Rhea meets Aedric while foraging for herbs, and immediately develops a friendship with him. Although immature at times, and quick to anger, Rhea is loyal to those she loves, and will often put herself in danger, without a second thought.
In battle, Rhea fights with her fists, delivering quick strikes, which allow her to build stamina quickly. Rhea can encourage her allies, protecting them from fear and boosting their attack, or increase her own speed and evasion, allowing her to act more often than her friends. (2)
Athena
Athena is a traveling healer from the Guineverian city of Berholven, A Favoured of Trestae, Goddess of the Stars, she seeks to atone for her mistakes. She is burdened by the guilt of her past, and is incredibly consumed with how the world, and her Goddess, perceives her.
In battle, Athena is capable of treating the wounds of her allies, purging them of ailments, and bringing them back from the brink of death. Additionally, Athena possesses powerful prayers, which increase various aspects of her friends’ offensive and defensive strengths. (3)
A Symphony of Gameplay Mechanics:
The gameplay mechanics of Trails of Kokoro are a testament to its versatility and depth. Trails of Kokoro offers a truly immersive gameplay experience, blending elements of visual novel style, and strategic turn-based combat.
One cannot help but be drawn to the engaging gameplay mechanics. The combination of battle preparation and strategic combat keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting. Whether you find yourself conversing with captivating NPCs or engaging in enthralling battles, the gameplay mechanics in Trails of Kokoro strike a good balance between challenge and enjoyment even if the game isn’t so easy and you may need to give a few more tries to succeed. You may need at least one round to learn the enemies’ strengths and weaknesses. You cannot hope to win without it.
The game enthralls players with strategic turn-based combat encounters. Battles require careful consideration of tactics, leveraging the varied abilities and synergies between the characters. The seamless integration of gameplay and narrative ensures that combat is not merely a means to an end, but a vital aspect of character development and the progression of the overall story.
The combat is chain-based and you defeat opponents one link at a time on this chain. There are also two rows and any enemies in the first row must be defeated before attacking the second, however, certain abilities and spells will and can target the enemies in the back row. You get rests in between which revive you to full health, so planning ahead is vital. Almost half the battle is preparation. Characters and enemies are represented as cards on the battlefield. Each character’s speed stat determines how often they can attack or use abilities and spells. Some spells or abilities can be used secondary to other actions within the same turn, though you still have to pay for them. Regarding paying, characters earn RE instead of MP or mana and gain it by attacking. Athena and other spell casters can recover RE with a special ability. The other way the mechanics are dealt with is that some abilities and spells can only be used every x amount of turns. Many buffs and debuffs are available and of vital importance to winning or losing battles.
Visuals and Sound:
The visual aesthetics of Trails of Kokoro are a sight to behold and weave together images of beauty and wonder. From breathtaking landscapes to intricate character designs, every pixel is a work of art. The attention to detail extends to the sound design and is nothing short of awe-inspiring, with every pixel radiating the dedication of the developers’ artistic vision. A captivating musical score that will certainly set the mood for every scene. Combining stunning visuals with a charming soundtrack, the game creates an auditory experience that pulls players deeper into its world.
A Melodic Journey
Trails of Kokoro’s captivating musical score is an artistic marvel in its own right, transcending the boundaries of mere background music. From delicate piano melodies that tug at heartstrings to soaring orchestral arrangements that give weight to majestic battles, the soundtrack elevates every moment of the game. Its ability to elicit powerful emotional responses in players is a testament to the composer’s brilliance and their understanding of the game’s thematic depth.
Overall Experience: Trails of Kokoro provides players with a unique opportunity to delve into the profound aspects of life, love, and what it means to be human. This remarkable indie game is sure to leave players craving for more. The compelling narrative and intricately crafted characters are surely an experience that leaves a long-lasting impression in our hearts. Not only does it provide fun entertainment, but it also encourages introspection and contemplation, something I find is very important in RPG games and I think others do too since most of the best-selling RPG games are very emotional at times. The level of storytelling, combined with captivating gameplay mechanics, makes many moments spent in the Trails of Kokoro’s world filled with wonder and wanting to know what happens next. It’s the kind of game that will serve as an excellent example of the magic of storytelling and the power of human connections. This combination is what I feel makes the game worthwhile.
Trails of Kokoro defies conventional labels, effortlessly blending visual novel storytelling with strategic RPG gameplay. The game is wholesome and the result is an emotionally impactful, intellectually stimulating, and artistically sublime experience. This game proves that indie titles possess the ability to touch our souls, transcending the boundaries of the virtual realm. Brace yourself for an unforgettable journey that will forever hold a cherished place in your gaming memories, captivating both your heart and soul.
